NYOS Symphony Orchestra’s Road to the BBC Proms 2016

It has truly been a landmark year for The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS), with NYOS Symphony Orchestra and NYOS Jazz Orchestra invited to give stand-alone performances at the BBC Proms in 2016. That’s two performances, in two different genres, for one youth arts organisation. In this short documentary film we see NYOS Symphony Orchestra (The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland) conducted by Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the charismatic Ilan Volkov performing Stravinsky’s wonderfully rhythmic composition The Firebird during its 2016 summer tour.

The Symphony Orchestra is also joined by BBC New Generation Artist, Pavel Kolesnikov, to perform Tchaikovsky’s turbulent and virtuosic Second Piano Concerto.

This landmark summer tour concluded with a stand-alone performance at the BBC Proms 2016. During this concert the Orchestra performed the world premiere of a completely new work by composer Helen Grime. The composition formed part of a joint commission by The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Grime’s works are rooted in Scottish connections, taking inspiration from two pictures by Scottish artist Joan Eardley.
